🛰️☕ Day 5: From Espresso to Executive – AI That Plans, Not Just Pours

Extra resource for the keen beans.

Hello again!

Today we’re venturing into the future—beyond automation and into the realm of agentic AI. These are advanced systems capable of acting with increased autonomy, making strategic decisions, and even initiating actions with little or no human input. It’s where the AI assistant becomes the AI strategist. ☕🧠🌍

🔍 What Is Agentic AI?

  • Agentic AI is not just responsive—it’s proactive. It doesn’t wait for your prompt; it observes, learns, adapts, and acts.
  • 🤖 A Step Beyond Automation: While automation follows clearly defined rules and schedules, agentic AI takes initiative, adapts to changing circumstances, and makes complex, often strategic, decisions on your behalf.
  • 🧠 Multi Modal Intelligence: Beyond text, agentic systems interpret and integrate image, video, and audio inputs for richer, more holistic insights.
  • ⚖️ Ethical and Transparent: The more autonomous the AI, the greater the responsibility. Agentic AI must be aligned with principles of fairness, privacy, and transparency.

That said, true agentic AI isn’t fully mainstream yet. There are still technological, ethical, and infrastructural challenges to overcome. But it’s coming—and likely sooner than we think. Engaging with these ideas now puts you ahead of the curve, ready to implement them when the time is right.

🌟 Emerging Applications and Future Possibilities

  • 📚 Dynamic Personalisation: Imagine a system that tailors every student’s journey in real time—adjusting advice, learning materials, and communication based on ongoing engagement and performance.
  • 🌍 Cross-Border Credential Recognition: Agentic systems could simplify the notoriously complex evaluation of international qualifications by intelligently mapping and aligning global standards.
  • 🧑💻 Virtual Mobility and Collaboration: Autonomous agents could manage virtual student exchanges, facilitate collaborative projects between institutions, or initiate joint research opportunities.

💭 What Could This Look Like for You?

As this technology matures, it’s worth imagining how agentic AI could shift your own role:

  • Could an AI autonomously manage partnerships in emerging markets?
  • Could it monitor policy changes and automatically propose new strategies?
  • Might it even take lead on designing region-specific campaigns?

🎙️ A Real-World Example: The AI Voice Agent

But let’s stop dreaming and look at a hands-on, practical example of what this technology can do now. As a fun experiment, I designed an AI voice agent tasked with calling students and getting them enrolled onto my brand-new Football Course at Nottingham Forest University.

How does it work?

  • You input your name and phone number in the form.
  • Within minutes, you’ll get a call from an AI agent with my voice!
  • It will talk to you about the courses on offer, discuss options, pricing, and finance, and book a visit or open day slot for you.

Give it a go for free at the following link.

Chat with it, ask it easy and difficult questions—and let me know what you think!

💭 Your Personal Research Agent

In our last lesson, we explored ChatGPT Tasks for automating regular updates. Now, take that concept further—what if you needed a much more capable research assistant?

This brings us to ChatGPT’s new feature: Deep Research.

Here’s what it can do:

  • Search web pages and academic journals
  • Collate the information it finds
  • Synthesise and generate a report of up to 5,000 words
  • Include charts, graphs, and tables (if you ask)
  • Provide a full list of references or a bibliography

To access this, all you need is a Plus subscription. Click the Telescope icon (labelled Deep Research) and give it your research question or task. The agent takes it from there. Depending on the complexity, it can take up to 30 minutes to complete.

🧪 Exercise: Conceptualise Your AI Agent

Think about your role: What task or challenge do you wish an autonomous AI could take over entirely?

  • What decisions would it make?
  • What data would it need access to?
  • What would you want it to do daily, weekly, or reactively?
  • How would you ensure it acts responsibly?

Sketch out your ideal agent—as if you could brief a tech team to build it tomorrow. That tech team will most likely be a system like ChatGPT in the very near future. Having your blueprint ready means you’ll be one of the first to benefit from it.

🚨 Important Consideration: Ethics & Oversight

With autonomy comes responsibility. How would you ensure fairness, accountability, and explainability in agentic systems? What governance structures would you need to put in place?

✨ Today’s Action Step ✨

Envision: Identify one strategic area where autonomous AI could have long-term impact. Consider the opportunity—and the risks. Draft your own agent blueprint.

What’s Next?

Tomorrow, we’ll bring it all together—connecting the dots between prompting, chatbots, assistants, automation, and agentic AI to build a strategy that fits your role and goals.

Till then, enjoy your coffee break,
