Why it was developed

The University of Texas at Austin developed UT Sage, a virtual instructional designer and AI tutor, to enhance student engagement and support the responsible use of generative AI in teaching and learning. The platform allows faculty to create interactive AI tutors tailored to their courses while ensuring compliance with privacy, security, and academic integrity standards.

What it does

UT Sage provides instructors with tools to design AI tutors that support personalized learning experiences:

  • Custom AI Tutors – Faculty can create course-specific AI tutors by defining learning objectives, addressing common misconceptions, and uploading relevant materials.
  • Privacy & Security Compliance – Meets UT Austin’s guidelines for data protection and does not share resources or interactions with third parties.
  • Syllabus & Content Integration – Instructors can upload course materials, and Sage will interpret them for students.

The platform is designed to improve student learning outcomes while keeping AI usage transparent and accountable.

How it works

UT Sage operates using Llama 3.1 405B, a large language model (LLM), along with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) to enhance accuracy and relevance. It integrates into UT Austin’s learning environment through:

  • Tutor Creation Workflow – Instructors train AI tutors via a guided process based on effective teaching principles.
  • Interactive AI Assistance – Students engage with AI tutors for coursework guidance and topic-specific coaching.
  • Institutional Pilot & Expansion – Currently in a pilot phase, Sage is being tested with select faculty and will expand in the future.
